About Peter Charalambides. UK.
Peter Charalambides is a self-trained painter living and working in London, England. The primary aims of his work is to create and destroy images in an attempt to produce something new, fresh and invigorating. The final works are characterised by colour and texture- qualities that magnify an expressionist style throughout his works. Peter is fascinated by the ideas of beauty and how this rather ethereal concept exists in our modern westernized society. Furthermore, these are often explored against the backdrop of drawings and writing that chronicle the triteness of everyday living.

Bison Jump
Oil on Canvas (Stressed painted wood frame)
74 x 44 cm
Concept:
The dancers explained this jump to me: one has to centre one’s entire energy inwardly and, from a standing start, spring into the air – the power of it seems like the snap of positive electricity as the human form propels upwards with the greatest effort.
It was the force of this jump that I wanted to capture, not necessarily even the dancer.

Artwork detail:
The view is a simple one, just the houses opposite. It has no great distance and is completely and utterly familiar. But sometimes, one notices it’s subtle changes: the light catches the top of the geranium leaf on the parapet and dances on the facade of those houses, flashing on the scaffolding which implies a sense of time, repair and evolution. It’s amazing what you notice when stuck inside.

Hand signed print and hand- written explanation by the artist of how the painting developed, to the person it is intended for.
Concept
The theme ‘a world without end’ inspired me to paint. I looked at images of the earth and could see a baby and mothers face in the ocean.
My intention became to define these faces which then seemed to evoke a feeling of hope, strength and unconditional love. i think this indefinable word love is visible in nature, especially as there is more time to watch now. Nature seems to push through even in the darkest and inhospitable places.
The new birth of a baby pushing through the sea metaphorical of rebirth in all things.

In her own words:
Inspired by the theme a world without end.
The canvas board was painted a dark colour as I wanted to convey light against it.
I had an image in my head of blowing kisses as you might do to those family and friends when ending a skype call, especially now with this lock down.
As the painting evolved the kisses became leaves and perhaps petals and these blew from the mouth of a magician type figure to circle the earth and to help it to heal. The flower emerged as a symbol of pure unconditional love that remains in us when that someone has gone. The hat and the flower have appeared in a few paintings over the years perhaps related to this thought.
As children we believe in magic., everything is possible, I think we need that now.

An insight into Handy’s printmaking process:
I attempt to capture a time, place, or circumstance generally stemming from a long-lost photo. From there, I engrave lines into either a copper or acrylic plate that is corresponding with the photo. I will take the captivating subject of the picture, using the method called “chine collé,” and adhere the image to the art sheet of paper, sending it through the press at 1400lbs of pressure along with the ink-filled engraved lines on the plate. The ink and the delicate tissue paper with the image all become one piece.–Jay H.
Jay Handy was living in foster care during his teens. His art today reflects the synthesis of a natural nostalgia for youth and his tumultuous past. While he experimented with encaustic painting, Jay finally settled upon a unique formula that has become the language through which he creates the otherworldly atmosphere his work is known for — etching and chine collé.

Mata Hari: The Self by Daphne Ang
Original Painting, ‘Mata Hari: The Self’, ...I am full, filled, and fulfilled...
Mata Hari, Pagi Bintang,
With you I shine, an incandescent light
You have the best and the rest of me
We will be the brightest stars in the sky
A fire ignites in me
I am full, filled, and fulfilled
Deep and precious are the experiences
We share – the mundane and the sublime
Another dimension with you
Another dimension in you
‘Mata Hari’
Acrylic on canvas board
30 x 20inches (76cm x 50.8cm)
In ‘Mata Hari: The Self’, the picture has turned into night. The white-hot streak of pure light that penetrates through the centre of the image stands in stark contrast with the absolute blackness of the background. ‘Mata Hari’ is a painting based on a poem by the artist whereby she describes the experience of the lifting of the “self” from the darkness of the unconscious into the light of consciousness through a connection with another.
“My work is heavily inspired by the writings of Carl Jung and his work into understanding the human psyche and the deep unconscious. My paintings depict and articulate the ‘abstract unconscious’ through the use of active imagination, a method of meditation used in analytical psychology which refers to the process and method of introspection which opens up the psyche and its inner world of images, allowing the intangible unconscious contents to be expressed in tangible forms and creative works.”
The brilliant white light (‘Mata Hari’) can be seen as a visual manifestation of the light of the Self, and it is shown emerging like quicksilver from the darkness of the unconscious and becoming visible to the conscious mind. The rays of golden light emanating from the top left bind the numinous scene together in aesthetics and in meaning. Distilled through the process of abstraction (whereby line and colour textural relationships become the sole means of expression), it is in the abstraction of forms and purity of colour that pure emotion and meaning finds form.

Spring Is Here-But We Are Not-The Shadow by Daphne Ang

Artwork detail :
‘Spring Is Here (But We Are Not): The Shadow’
Acrylic and Chinese ink on canvas
24 x 18 inches (61 x 46 cm)
‘The Shadow’ is based on the notion that there parts of our self we suppress which we suppress into our unconscious mind. Hidden from plain sight in our conscious mind, the shadow is a concept of Carl Jung's and can be understood as being a darker version of the Self in ourselves which remain concealed in our unconscious mind.
Our shadow consists of manifestations or characteristics of our personality that exist in our unconscious. This may include aspects of the Self –– not one’s conscious self (personality) but Self as in a sense of one's whole being. Aspects of the Shadow include sides of us that we may not want others to see, versions of ourselves that we repress due to life circumstances such as artistic abilities, or for the very fact that it is not needed in at that very point in one's conscious life.
While we all have dark aspects of our psyche, the shadow is however not always a negative thing, for there is great richness that springs from it. To acknowledge its existence and find out it's nature allows one to activate it in times where a harder approach is needed.
"One of the things I do with my studies and work with Jungian psychology is learning how to harness the Shadow from the unconscious to balance the conscious ego, and to be able to so-called, ‘summon the shadow’ in times of need."
However, just as light cannot exist without darkness and vice versa, we need to rebalance the psyche and send the shadow back to the unconscious after it becomes no longer needed. This involves performing symbolic personal ritual after one encounters a situation whereby the shadow is activated for whatever reason.
Concept:
‘The Shadow’ is a visual manifestation of the inner workings as a result of performance of this symbolic ritual involving the act of summoning and purging one’s shadow to and from the realms of the unconscious. In this painting, the shadow glows with a luminous pearlescent iridescent lustre, conferring it with both a numinous and ghost-like quality. It visualises the shadow as a divine yet haunting spectre as it makes its journey rising up from or descending back to the darkness of the unconscious.
Hidden from plain sight in our conscious mind, the shadow is a concept of Carl Jung's and can be understood as being a darker version of the Self in ourselves, which remain concealed in our unconscious mind.
Created as part of the series ‘Spring Is Here (But We Are Not), ‘The Shadow’ was executed as part of the artist’s investigation into the polarities of darkness and light, and how to depict this with paint. The need to traverse the full spectrum in order to find the middle ground between the polarities of black and white –– and of the meaning and experience of life, is the central theme of these experimentations.
Painted during the lockdown imposed during the flu pandemic of 2020, the search for the transcendental equilibrium amidst these highly uncertain times is the main message behind this work.
This work was executed using high quality professional grade materials and mediums from the Liquitex and Golden Acrylics Professional range. Done on a Loxley Gold 3D canvas with a depth of 1.3", making framing unnecessary. The works are also finished with archival standard sealant with UV protection (Golden Polymer Varnish), which gives a protective flexible dust-resistant surface. This varnish is removable with ammonia for restoration purposes if needed. A non-removable isolation coat was applied over the painting prior to varnishing; giving an extra layer of protection if/when the varnish is removed.
Equilibrium-Black-White by Daphne Ang

“The longing for light is the longing for consciousness.” Carl J. Jung
A central feature in the artist’s practice is her use of the act and medium of painting as a vehicle for the transmission, articulation and interpretation of the images that arise from the dialogue between consciousness and the unconscious mind.
Done on a Loxley acid-free cotton canvas board, the surface is finished with Golden Archival Aerosol Varnish MSA with UVLS that resists changes in appearance, remains flexible and is removable for conservation purposes. Painted with professional grade materials and mediums from the Liquitex and Golden Acrylics Professional range.
Instead of painting layers upon layers, a process involving repeated steps of re-working, de-construction (sometimes destructing) over an extended period of time, the following selection of works represent a different facet of the artist's repertoire.
This series were painted in one session using a limited palette of with black and white, as well as a range of reflective paints such as metallic, iridescent and interferences paints. A central effort permeates all these works –– each striving for the synthesis of opposites through the use of blending black and white paint in order to traverse and experience the entire monochromatic spectrum.
“The act of painting always mirrors something inside me, and my paintings always echo and chimes with the same melody as within me. For this reason, I see abstract painting as providing the best possible expression for something unknown, the stuff of the sublime and divine. Painting the abstract opens up the possibilities of interpretation and allowing others to see different things without limiting the imagination. Distilled through the process of abstraction whereby line and colour textural relationships become the sole means of expression, it is in the abstraction of forms and purity of colour that pure emotion and meaning finds form.”
These works are manifestations of the artist’s meditations on questions regarding the polarities encountered in life. These introspections have arisen out of a journey to seek wholeness and unity of the Self –– the path of individuation. Be it in nature, science, or in our inner psychic world, the confrontation and clash of the opposites is merely a compensation of two polarities in a spectrum seeking unity and balance. All opposites seek to achieve a state of equilibrium; energy is re-distributed from interactions between hot/cold, high/low –– thereby to have the ability to hold the opposites together, and the awareness of the spectrum on which these dichotomies exist, is to rise out of our primal darkness.
Inspired by Jungian analytical psychology and concepts of the individual and collective unconscious, ‘Equilibrium/Black-White’ is a visualisation of the individual unconscious. A central feature in the artist’s practice is her use of the act and medium of painting as a vehicle for the transmission, articulation and interpretation of the images that arise from the dialogue between consciousness and the unconscious mind.

Tracy Nors. UK.
The Coastline of East Sussex is the inspiration for my expressive landscape paintings. I know the place very well but the mood and atmosphere changes every time walk there. There is so much sky and glimpses of sea amongst the cliffs and fields. Colour is of huge importance to me as it has the ability to evoke many emotions. I begin in an intuitive way, making marks from memory that are a reflections of my experiences on my walks. I work expressively and spontaneously up to a point where the painting starts to form a sense of place but is also abstracted. The application then becomes more directed. I build up layers by adding and subtracting, imparting details of a place which are also open to interpretation from the viewer. Sometimes there may be more figurative elements appearing; hints of figures, boats or buildings. I hope to capture the atmosphere of a place so that the viewer is engaged on an emotional as well as visual level. Recent paintings move further away from the reality of realism in the landscape towards abstraction and contain both fragments of the real and the imagined. Shapes and colours are used to produce painterly improvisations that are my perception of the world around me. CV: Educated to MA level in Visual Arts. Boats by Tracy Nors
Original Painting. An abstract image of a landscape with rowing boats.

Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
An abstract image of a landscape with rowing boats. On canvas (unframed)
About artist:
I am essentially a Colourist.
I'm obsessed by how a tiny amount of one colour against others, can elevate a painting to another level. I don't paint any one place as it exists, as a literal interpretation, as this doesn't interest me. My work is abstracted.
My landscapes draw both from my surroundings on the South Coast of England and the visual vocabulary I have amassed in my brain. I begin by using colour intuitively, creating shapes, rhythms and marks within the canvas. I work in layers, adding and subtracting until a harmony is reached and the painting 'sings'. I sometimes add figurative elements but often also work completely abstract. I hope to engage the viewer on an emotional as well as a visual level.

SOLD-Lost not Found by Kieran Jack Rook

Original Painting. It is in these times that we begin to question what does it mean to be human within the absurdity of it all?
‘Lost not Found’
Size:
100 x 70 CM
Medium:
Oil paint
Artwork detail:
Here we bare witness to a scene set in what looks to be a very small kitchen. A large fluffy-slipper-wearing androgynous figure cloaked in floral dress appears as if they are attempting to climb into a cupboard or escape through a widow. The whole affair appears awkward and uncomfortable.
Concept:
During these trying times, of distance and isolation, with the world down on its hands and knees begging for some kind of respite from the unabating elephant in the room. It’s hard not do a little overthinking, so you work yourself up, and loose a little faith in reality and what it means to be human (just me?). With ‘Lost not found’ I am unclear as to whether this is solely a self-portrait or I have just used my portrait as a surrogate figure for anyone struggling alone in isolation experiencing some form of existential crisis in one way or another. The lack of uncertainty for the future, the loss of life, of jobs, and economic hardship, can be bewildering for those suffering in silence. What has been brought to light, as we all close our doors and cower away, with only a certain few martyrs holding fort through this tempest, is the feeling of helplessness with the breakdown of society into a form of Orwellian nightmare. It is in these times that we begin to question what does it mean to be human within the absurdity of it all? However the glimmer of hope is our memories, our memories of better times, and if we just hold on for a while longer, we will be able to create new memories, together.

Stir Crazy by Kieran Jack Rook
Original Painting. During these trying times, of distance and isolation, with the world down on its hands and knees begging for some kind of respite from the unabating elephant in the room...
‘Stir Crazy’
150x100 CM
Medium:
Oil paint on canvas
Artwork detail explain:
An uncharacteristically large male figure sits on a small unmade bed, resting both arms upon his knees, fingers interlocked, with his distorted swirling face looking out disconcertingly making eye contact with the viewer. He sits still, in an aged nondescript room. Behind the figure, to the right of the room, drawn-open dingy dated curtains reveal a predatory corporate mascot knocking at the window. On the adjacent wall a trompe l'oeil mural simulates the replica of the 35,000-year-old cave art masterpiece the French government funded. The simulacra of wild fauna appears as though they are fleeing in the opposite direction from the corporate mascot, however unbeknownst to them they are merely one in the same. In the bottom left of the painting we find two tiny figurines dancing with one another, in a dream-like foray of reverie, upon a table, under the tungsten glow of a single bedside lamp.

Concept:
This work is the centre piece of a body of work inspired by mythology, the timeless wisdom of The Vedas and European landscapes. Ancient Vedic texts describe the material world arising from a cosmic triad of forces, creation, maintenance and destruction. The force of maintenance is necessary for the other 2 to exist with integrity for at least some passage of time and then move to the opposite state. From this interplay comes Nature, the human narrative and the great leveller, Time. Kings, kingdoms, species and life as we know it comes and goes but the greatest creator Nature remains and that is a world without end. The story of Leda and the Swan has inspired poets and artists throughout our civilisation. For me there exists a tantalising, innocent moment as Leda (who has perhaps never seen a swan) is so enraptured by the beauty of this unique animal and unaware of it’s true status, beckons to it, thereby sealing her fate and the tragic outcome that continues for generations.
View of Hobart from Mount Nelson , Tasmania by Lawrence Mathias
Original Watercolour. The painting presents a serene kind of landscape, but as with all such pictures, there is a much deeper and often troubled narrative behind the painted surface.
Vitsa 1: View of Hobart from Mount Nelson , Tasmania
38x28cm. Watercolour on watercolour paper
The picture is done in a succession of watercolour washes, with a carefully managed perspective and balance of tones and colours.
The picture revisits an older style of landscape painting, with the idea of lofty foreground trees framing a grander view, stretching away into the distance. It presents a serene kind of landscape, but as with all such pictures, there is a much deeper and often troubled narrative behind the painted surface.

Vitsa No 2: View across canal with gondolas, Venice
56x38cmcm.
Artwork detail:
A fairly large watercolour study done with spontaneity and speed to capture the play of light and shadow on water. There is no underdrawing, and the picture is built up with solid blocks of colour and washes.
The style of this watercolour aims for some of the freshness of past painters of Venice, like John Singer Sargent. It takes a rather beautiful but commonplace Venetian viewpoint and explores the interplay of bright sunlight on the gondolas and water, as well as the shadowed facades of buildings across the canal.

Oil on Paper.

About Artist:
Ugo Li. Paris, France
Ugo Li, born in 1987, is a French painter, who is currently living and working in Paris. His bold, pictorial and often abstract work appropriates and reinterprets the visual signs of today’s society. Everyday inspiration: Ugo Li was surrounded by creativity from an early age, being raised in his father’s artist studio and following his parents around art galleries. His work is highly personal, inspired by both major life events and the small everyday moments that constitute one's existence. His paintings explore the intersections of dreams, memory, personal history and daily life. Media Musings: Ugo Li often takes his inspiration from the colourful advertising that pervades society. He plays with words and slogans that appear isolated on the canvas and are intended to provide more of a pictorial purpose since they are removed from their original commercial context. For Ugo Li the canvas becomes a place for him to project his emotions, he often removes and repaints the work until he is happy with the dialogue that has emerged. Emerging Talent: Ugo Li has exhibited in both solo and group shows internationally in countries such as, the United States, Thailand, Canada and France. His work belongs to collections around Europe.

Bowl of Bollacks
Size: measure in centimetre

Medium: oil on canvas
Artwork Concept:
A classical still life? Or cartoon balls?
A comment on the choices of modern male beauty? Hairy or not hairy?
Or an emasculation? What did happen to their owners?
A palette of restful, purples and pinks? Or a livid and painful trophy?
A comment on the pointlessness of opinion? Or just a bowl of Bollacks?
About Artist:
Mark James Nicholls. UK
Mark J. Nicholls is a contemporary artist who lives and works in West Cornwall. He was born and bred in Newlyn, where he also now supports his living by running Jelberts Ice cream shop in the summer months. This provides him the winter time to totally dedicate himself to his art. He currently works out of an historic artists studio, also in Newlyn. Nicholls studied Fine Art at the University of Brighton, followed by an MA at the Royal College of Art. He has participated in group exhibitions in the USA, London, Bristol and Cornwall and has had solo exhibitions in London and Cornwall, most recently at Daisy Laing Gallery, Penzance. He has been the recipient of awards from The Arts Council, South West Arts, the Daler Rowney Drawing Award and a studio residency in the USA, amongst others. Nicholls’ work is characteristically robust and visceral but his composition and use of colour vividly demonstrate his painterly technique. Classical portraits and still lives are rendered in bright purples and oranges and muted greys and his familiar pictorial motifs such as clock-faces, shoes and cigarettes feature prominently. His work is based on the human condition and using figuration as a base-point. As Nicholls says, “I like to make work that first and foremost pushes, excites and surprises me. I feel my job as an artist is to not illustrate or decorate but to make work that provokes and entertains in the way that art makes possible.” As a graduate of the Royal College of art, Nicholls’ influences are undeniable. Picasso, Bacon and Philip Guston all make appearances but Nicholls’ adds his own absurdist and contemporary perspective to a familiar iconography. Nicholl's own take on classical portraiture is a feature of his work, and the Pope is now a regular in his cast of characters. From Velasquez to Bacon to Nicholls, his Popes are now more grotesquely comic than their previous iterations. However for all its art historical context and contemporary cultural reference his work retains a powerful energy and vibrancy that stems from Nicholls’ instinctive and almost automatic approach to creation. As he says, “I am unsure why and what I am doing painting. But the need to make images is stronger than ever”.

Is this a time for superheroes? If so what should our contemporary superheroes look like? Not wearing a cape that’s for sure. This second-hand scrapbook superhero seems to suit our times, just as the piece itself is a collage of found and out of context images. He’s got Rembrandt’s nose, but there’s a smart phone ready for a selfie. Is the scallop face mask something to hide behind, or a death mask skull. Fatboy, the Cornish superhero might not be fit for purpose but he does seem fit for the times.

About Artwork:
Guilherme Bergamini. Amazon River.
Macapá boasts that it is the only state capital to be bathed by the Amazon River. Between the high and low tides, the pair of beams turns into a football field popularly known as foot-mud. When the river goes down, the game begins, when the river rises, the match ends. The interaction of time as a factor of nature, with the simple passing of a rain, allows numerous shades. Between 15h 10 and 18h 50 when it’s at the low tide and colours vibrate in a unique and particular way of the State of Amapá.

In his Own Words:
I believe if I can understand my inner self, I will be able to understand other people. A step toward its understanding begins by seeing the inner-side through Art.
I have attempted to visualize the human nature since when I was in military service in South
Korea. I’m very scared of war, like everyone, of course. But with me, this fear is more concrete, since I am a citizen of South Korea, which is constantly threatened with war by the other Korea in the north. I have always lived with this pressing fear of war, even though I have no direct experience of it. This life in South Korea naturally made me wonder about violence, conflicts between humans, and now not only violence but also other human nature are included in my aesthetic research category.

I work putting the focus in the theme of Nature Challenges: nature is disturbed and reveals the consequences of the human’s violence. I studied the climate warming and their
consequences on the breakdown of glacials in some parts of the planet, specially Antarctica Many species of “flora” and “fauna” are with difficult for survive, with to climate change: for example: "The polar bear", who is forced to migrate constantly with the destruction of the masses of frost, he cannot move normally. The white alabaster stone (tipicaly in Volterra,
where I am living) is a soft material for sculpture that significate the white times of ice and glaciers.

The painting intends to reflect about the fragility in our planet and the need to take careful of
it. " In this period I am thinking about the relationships between 'climate challenges' and Covid-19, about “climate challenges and human actions”, in the relationships of nature/culture and the
influence of the men actions in the warming global. But, at the same time, this adversity is also an opportunity: after this adversity, I wish the world will be more in tuned with solidary and more creative. Artist in the Lockdown Series, 2020
Size: 23x18cm
Medium: High quality photo print, fitted on foam board with the author’s certificate and signature.
About the Series:
The Vital Support was created during the Coronavirus lockdown in UK.
I am classified as person who is within a high risk Covid-19 category due to my underlying health condition. Thus, I have been officially advised by NHS which is following the government recommendations to stay at home on my own for at least twelve weeks.
This came with multiple challenges and one of them was that I have run out of all general food supplies within a week. It was impossible to register for a shopping online in the supermarkets as a new customer.
It was only following four weeks when Asda and Waitrose sent me e-mails respectively confirming that they have received the information from the government that I now classify as a vulnerable person and I am given a priority to do my online grocery shopping and get it delivery. Sainsbury's refused to register new vulnerable customers.
After two weeks spent online and phone, trying to get support, I received an essential food supply parcel from the government, which mostly consisted of canned food. It was a truly kind gesture which I genuinely appreciated. However, the tin cans were of the type that could only be opened with special tin opener. Unfortunately, I did not have it...

At The Worlds End: Dvāpara by ELKYMY
Original Painting. It's ina series of paintings comprising of telescopic views of the faces of different imaginary exoplanets, each set against a sea of blackness and the dark void of space.
‘At The Worlds End: Dvāpara
Size: 24 x 18 inches (61 x 46 cm)
Medium: Acrylic, polyurethane, powdered pigments (Mica) on deep edged stretched canvas with a depth of 1.3 inches (3.5cm)
About:
ELKYMY (Textural and painterly collaboration between London artists Andrea Papi and Daphne Ang)
Artwork concept:
‘Dvāpara (द्वापर)’ was created as part of ‘At The Worlds End’, a series of paintings comprising of telescopic views of the faces of different imaginary exoplanets, each set against a sea of blackness and the dark void of space.
‘Dvāpara’ was created during the height of the pandemic crisis of 2020 in the United Kingdom, where the artists are based. It provides a brief moment of interstellar escapism, reaching to the stars and galaxies for solace amidst these trying times here on our earth.
Artwork detail:
This work was executed using high quality professional grade materials and mediums from the Liquitex and Golden Acrylics Professional range. Done on Loxley Gold 3D canvasses with a depth of 1.3", making framing unnecessary. The works are also finished with archival standard sealant with UV protection (Golden Polymer Varnish), which gives a protective flexible dust-resistant surface. This varnish is removable with ammonia for restoration purposes if needed. A non-removable isolation coat was applied over the painting prior to varnishing, giving an extra layer of protection if/when the varnish is removed.

At The Worlds End: Tretā !ेता by ELKYMY
Original painting. ‘Tretā !ेता’ was created as part of ‘At The Worlds End’, a series of paintings comprising of telescopic views of the faces of different imaginary exoplanets, each set against a sea of blackness and the dark void of space.
Size: 24 x 18 inches (61 x 46 cm)
Medium: Acrylic, polyurethane, powdered pigments (Mica) on deep edged stretched
canvas with a depth of 1.3 inches (3.5cm)
Artwork detail:
Despite the advancements of science and the exploration of space, deepening our
understanding of our cosmos, it has also become a much stranger place given its infinite
formlessness and the barrenness of its void. Inspired by views of Jupiter captured by NASA's
Juno Spacecraft, ‘At The Worlds End’ depicts imagined landscapes and extra-terrestrial
topography of planets yet to be discovered. A celestial and imaginary cosmology procured
by artistic imagination and the unconscious mind, these paintings conveys an overall sense
of man’s insignificance when confronted with infinite space and the immeasurability of time.
The textural terrain of the surface comprises of an initial application of polyurethane foam
which was first applied onto the surface of the canvas, then shaped and scraped using
various tools and impediments. Due to the chemical nature of the expanding foam, which
requires moisture to expand before curing to form a solid three-dimensional surface, left to
its own devices or with minimal intervention, the foam will expand and cure to form a solid
three-dimensional structure that has a puffy, cloud-like quality.
The foam can also be modelled by shaping and scraping to created textural effects evocative
of those found in natural landscapes. However, despite the intervention of the artist’s hand,
the foam has a certain quality of fluidity as it continues to grow and morph in shape and size
before it eventually dries out and cures. The ‘formlessness of foam’ and the unpredictability
of its final form can be seen as a manifestation of the spontaneity of nature.
A driving force underpinning the artistic vision of these works is the artists’ preoccupation
with the search for the perfect balance –– the equilibrium between the agency of the artist's
hand, the spontaneity of the materials, and the interaction between the pigment and paints
themselves.
An initial application of varying tones of pigmented colour to create a tonal underpainting
recalls one of the techniques (Grisaille) used by the Old Masters to depict areas of dark and
light. Thin transparent glazes and washes of interference and iridescent colours were applied
over the grisaille underpainting comprising of varying tones of pigmented paints. Due to the
shifting nature of interference colours, the painting changes in appearance when viewed
from different angles.
Overlapping layers of transparent pigments and thin glazes of iridescent colors evoke the
quality of swirling clouds and luminous bands of atmospheric gases arising from dramatic
cyclonic storms on distant planets, as seen in infrared views of space. One of the key
features of reflective paints (interference and iridescent) is in its ability to reflect light
differently than regular pigmented paints. The diffusion of color caused by the effects of
overlapping glazes of transparent pigmented paint, interference colours, and gloss gels,
imbues a sense of the ethereal glow emanating from the cosmic dust of a nebula, or the
atmospheric planetary hazes rising from the merging of storms.
While this evokes otherworldly and celestial scenery, "At The Worlds End" can be seen as a
manifestation of the connection between the psyches of the two artists. The shaping of
foam was executed without conscious intent or a plan, and hence is based on unconscious
material. The resulting imagery recalls the birth and death of planets and imbues a sense of
the cyclical nature of time. Because of the connection between the individual and collective
unconscious of the artists, the pictures take on an added dimension –– becoming a conduit
between art and science, artistic imagination and the collective unconscious.

Shard No 3 By Adina Andrus
Original Mix Media. The pieces that make up this series were created by collecting discarded materials reminiscent of a particular point in time and space and encasing them in cement which is subsequently broken to reveal these bits of day-to-day life.
Shard #3
Size:
25x25x7 cm
Medium:
Mixed media, cement art: cement, copper, wood, fibers, cloth, paper and acrylic
Artwork Concept
This is one of the work in the series “Assemblages“ which presents shards of present day life for examination.
An “assemblage” is an archaeological term meaning a group of different artifacts found in association with one another, that is, in the same context.
The pieces that make up this series were created by collecting discarded materials reminiscent of a particular point in time and space and encasing them in cement which is subsequently broken to reveal these bits of day-to-day life. One assemblage collects the pieces of an experience and organizing and classifying them offers the viewer a glance into and maybe an understanding of it. Photographic images of the spaces referenced in the assemblages are combined with references to archaeological imagery. The pieces are presented in a gridded structure, an attempt at ordering otherwise disparate and temporally and spatially remote experiences. This is one of the work in the series.

Size: 28x25cm
Medium: Ink and copper on paper
"The series "Ovo ab malum" is named after the Latin expression signifying from beginning to end, and I have started it as a reminder of the impermanence of the present situation relative to the history of humanity. It is inspired by decorative markings found on prehistoric pottery. I found that working with repeating patterns provides a sense of control and comfort that I have been missing in my day-to-day life during the past few weeks as life under quarantine and the need to leave my usual studio space has imposed many new constraints on my work." --Adina Andrus

Medium: Oil on linen
Oil on linen, stretched on shaped frame, 88 x 88 x 2 cm
Artwork detail:
This painting has been painted in many layers and it changed multiple times. Heart is a common subject in my paintings. I choose it as a symbol of being alive and enabled to feel.
About the Artist:
The very first idea of making irregular artworks was triggered in an art exhibition that was held in Thames-Side Studios gallery in 2019. I saw some paintings that were very large and tall. Then, I certainly had this idea in my mind to experiment more and make something different then I used to. My initial idea was to prepare a long piece of canvas and paint a series of paintings on it so it looked something similar to a camera film with different shots. So, I have painted a couple of tall canvases which made me think of making all kinds of shapes. In the beginning I started to make little shaped canvases and really enjoyed it. As the time went, my ideas evolved and I discovered new possibilities of hanging the paintings in unusual places, turning them and connecting them together in different ways. I am still on my way to finding perfect shapes and compositions.

Fast Bugs by Gideon Pain
Original Painting. ' The natural world has been little affected by the pandemic and in many cases benefited as an indirect result...'
‘Fast Bugs’
Acrylic and collage on paper
70 x 49 cm [image size]
This picture is about how the natural world has been little affected by the pandemic and in many cases benefited as an indirect result.
About the Artist Gideon Pain:
Gideon Pain’s pictures derive from a delight in the world around, a play on the mundane and everyday that we slip through on our way to somewhere else. They are about collective moments, some tragic some euphoric, when the sharing of an experience gives significance to something unnoticed. These quiet revelations bind nurture and reassure us in a world that quickly passes. Paint, in a digital age is a slow inaccurate and clumsy medium, making it perfect for capturing and re-contextualising this fragile transience.

Cycladic Figure and Moorland Road
Drypoint and mixed media monoprint
£225 included Framed and mounted.
Size: measure in centimetre 60 x 48
Framed and mounted with charcoal black ash frame.
Medium: Printrmaking
About Storey's printmaking process:
The use of technique here is with drypoints. A sharp steel scriber has been used to score into either an aluminium or plastic plate, here I have used plastic. Ink is then wiped onto the surface before being carefully wiped off. Ink sits in the scored areas. I have deliberately left thick areas of ink in some places and also reapplied ink where I feel too much has been wiped away or where I want additional colour (a la poupée).
A piece of damp paper is placed over the plate before they are rolled through the press together to produce the print. Ink from the scored grooves is squeezed onto the paper along with traces of additional ink added a la poupée.

£225 included Framed and mounted.
Size: measure in centimetre 59 x 48

Combining an interest in the permanence of talisman like objects from the natural world and the fragility of species and habitat, Sandra Storey draws on printmaking processes and mixed media to explore her ideas.

Size: measure in centimetre

Medium: oil on canvas
Artwork detail explain:
Made with the used turpentine to depict that an artistic process is defined in the way we chose to see. The world doesn’t seize when there is no commercial goods available, rather new ideas are born and it just keeps evolving from one situation to other.
In Her Own Words:
This work was made when I was at an environmental residency in the Blue Mountains, Australia and had very limited materials. Been working on the theme of environment I did not feel like discarding the used turpentine and rather decided to make work out of it. Work can be made from anything, and we shouldn’t release toxic materials knowingly, especially as artists of today.

ACRYLIC ON CLAYBOARD
This little house was built on a rock so can withstand all of the bad weather that hits it. We too can keep strong despite any difficulties that life throws at us. What is your rock? When I was working on this acrylic painting on claybord I felt that it was lacking impact so I attacked it with thick paint applied with a palette knife to make it more stormy. The rain effect was made using scraper tools and heavy sandpaper. --Kathy Gales.

Nothing To Share But Yesterday
50 x 70 cm,

A figure in a landscape, a woman stands on a grassy ridge above the sea, stretching up as she pegs unruly laundry to a line. She appears to be a figure from the past, a memory of
another age.
Artwork Concept
The open sea, the elements of water and wind, suggest the essential, ineluctable parts of the world. The manual, domestic chores say something about a simpler time.
The serpentine shapes echo the billowing of the fabrics and the combination of monochrome and sharper colours suggest both a time past and yet very much of the
present.

"This series of photographs was taken about 4 years ago in the loby of a building that no longer exists. It was a building where there was a multiple room for movie theatres in the centre of the city, they abandoned it in the 90s and when it lost its doors due to abandonment, the loby was filled with advertising posters over time, which for some is visual pollution for me is aesthetic. What inspired me to do this series, is the personal interest I have for the new Italian realism of the 70s and 80s, Villecle, Hains, Rotella, in my thesis I worked on that concept in screen printing and took it up with photography for this series of pictures.

In her own word:
In my creative process, I switch between being the Painter or the Finder who uses colour and form as a tool, and the Observer. That is my way to push myself towards the unexplored. Suddenly I find something; a balance, an equilibrium, an excitement, a direction or a movement that talks to me and fits into my unseen image world, beyond wordings.
I am happy when the obvious occurs. The image that I feel just works. The image that leaves me with a sense of content. The image that, with colours, shapes, lines, rhythm and light, builds a piece of artwork that, despite its two-dimensional surface, feels like a room to enter and that forms a standalone entity.
The artworks contain traces of emotional memories, kinetic memories and moods.
If time is given, if the viewer takes its time, here is something to be in and to remain in for contemplation.
And I find traces of myself in this new and unknown.
Welcome!

Wasteland No.1 by Rob Burton
Original Mixed Media. This decaying fabric, this unknowable terrain has become my biography...
Wasteland No.1
70cm x 50cm
Framed
Digital print on mixed media fibre
Date: 2020
“This decaying fabric, this unknowable terrain has become my biography, the euphoria then the anguish, layers of memories colliding, splintering and reconfiguring” Laura Grace Ford in Savage Messiah
About the work:
Wasteland 1 is a one off original digital dye sublimation print onto fabric created from manipulated silk shantung fibres. This original artwork features original analog photographic imagery. The work explores a narrative of absence and loss in the urban wasteland. Stories of those places and things that have come before that form the ghosts of our life. The ghosts of our lives haunt the long-abandoned ballrooms of the past, the hotels gone to seed, the docks and the river that continues flowing with the rust and the detritus of ages beneath its waters; vestiges of thoughts gone holding still to their memories. She hides from out of site but we know she is watching always in those urban spaces that have deteriorated into total dereliction, where every unidentified noise is pregnant with menace..

When Patrick’s mother passed away, he got back to work after the second day of bereavement leave(which he get two weeks)
Working as a psychiatric nurse, he told me: My patient needs me, I got no time to grieve. Bearing up all the other’s emotional tax, I looked at his sorrowful eyes, wandering, how about himself? Where did his issue go? Being a middle-aged gay man; single; having no children; not able to come out at the workplace…

Unconscious III by Robert Nitschmann
Original Painting. This piece is meant to visualize the unconscious with astronomical elements. Both share the infinite vastness.
Size: 30cm x 40 cm
Medium: Oil on Canvas Panel
About the artwork:
Each object is in it’s own orbit, leaving or entering the frame, overlapping or confronting each other. 3D objects contrast the flat background.
Robert Nitschmann on- Unconscious series
The goal is to create a surreal atmosphere by approaching the painting like a collage.Using both, artificially created structures and natural objects add to the feeling of the intangible. All the elements are painted in a traditional style. This painting shows three different objects, that are arranged in a collage-like manner. It is not clear if they are floating above or in front of the abstract background thus giving no indication of the relation to it. The head of David that seems to enter or leave the frame on the right side can easily be recognised. In contrast the spectator can see two rather indefinable objects to the left. Although the eye can understand the structure, the mind can’t.
You can see Nitschmann's work in our Exhibition.

“Turning the bread upside down at the table is like turning your back on Jesus” – This superstition varies from province to province and family to family. In mine, one could not leave the bread upside down because it would be like keeping the face of Jesus down – as disrespectful as it gets." -Elisa B.

Artwork detail :
An illustrative image in blues and mauves that evokes a mysterious moment in time. It was produced with collaged papers and cottons and combined with drawing and painting. The starting point was a beautiful newspaper photograph of trees that I used to fashion the dress. The shoes were also made with collage and layers of cotton and gold thread were used for the hair. The rest is painted with acrylic and drawn with pencil, the outside scene reflecting the trees of the dress design.

'This monochrome painting was inspired by an image seen on an old programme. I really liked the unusual shapes caused by the different sources of light and the shadows that form an atmospheric and mysterious image.
It is painted in acrylic on clayboard and uses scraping and scratching techniques as well as colour lifting to achieve interesting marks.' -- Kathy Gales

Gales used acrylic paint on Ampersand clayboard to paint a storm brewing over a row of beach huts.
